The second morning of
the 1999 white-tail deer season in Missouri, I was sitting at the
junction of a couple of small 'hollers' surrounded by mature mixed
hardwoods. About an hour after sunup, with a single snort, the
squirrel rustling in the leaves directly behind the tree I was leaning
against transformed into a small buck and doe about three feet
downwind of the back of my head.
The pair trotted aways
and stopped to look around. I managed to miss the 60-yard, slightly
quartering away shot. I fumbled around for another round while the
buck and doe walked out of sight. I decided to sit for another hour
before I went to check for signs that I might have hit something.
About 15 minutes later, the same pair came by again.
I managed to make the
40 yard broadside standing shot on the buck this time. A short
run ended in a headfirst tumble.
The Bullberry built
243 Winchester Encore did a superb job!
