It's
been a very long 6 months waiting to become a resident of Montana. Watching
all my new friends take deer, antelope, mountain goats and what not,
while all I could do is go and help pack them out. Still, I had a lot
of fun this season and found many places to go hunting.
The end of December,
I finally became a resident of this great state. So yesterday, my friend
says that I should go get a crop damage tag or something along those
lines that one of the local ranches is giving out. With little persuasion,
I did and we went out hunting.
Wanting to use something I hadn't shot a deer with yet, I decided to
bring my Contender in 6mm Bullberry. We saw many deer that morning,
some way too far away, some busted us as we approached. After running
around the prairie for a couple of hours, we spotted some deer and decided
to try for one.
The wind was in
our face and the sun at our backs. With plenty of cover between us,
our odds were pretty good. We walked as close as we dared and then had
to belly crawl the last 100yds or so. (I'm still pulling cactus out
of my hide.) After what seemed like forever, I got into position to
shoot. I searched the heard for the biggest doe.
Since they were
all laying down, I had a hard time deciding which one to shoot. After
picked one, I wasted no time. With the crosshairs on its neck, I pulled
the trigger. WHOOP, the deer's head fell without so much as a quiver.
I figured the range was right around 100yds.
I was way impressed
with the 6mm Bullberry, especially since I only had 58 gr vmax's loaded
up.. as we all know, not the first choice in deer bullets. So let's
see, got my first Montana deer and my first deer kill with the Bullberry.
All in all, a pretty darn fine day on the prairie.
