After
2 days of not seeing a deer around my stand but seeing them in a field
as I come out at night, I decided to move my stand to the field's edge
and hunt in the evening. I went out to the field at 2 PM, found a good
tree and got set up. To my disappointment, the landowner decided to
combine the field that same day while I was hunting it. They were done
by 4 PM so it gave time for everything to settle down.
At
about 4:45, I saw this buck at the far edge of the field. He was looking
around and threw his tail up and ran straight through the field to the
woodline that I was in.
Once
he got to the woods, he turned and walked right to where I was and stopped
broadside 10 feet from the base of my tree. The only shot I could get
was a neck shot because he was standing behind some branches. I got
ready, placed the cross hairs on the deer's neck and took the shot.
The
deer jumped at the sound of the shot and ran right under my stand and
into the woods. I was able to see about where he fell. I waited about
10 minutes before getting down. I packed up my stand, reloaded my gun
and went to the spot I saw him fall. He was lying right there.
When
I pulled him out, I counted 50 paces from the place I shot him to the
place he dropped.
I am
using a stainless steel contender, 14 inch stainless steel 209x50 Bullberry
barrel, Weaver mount with 3 T/C rings, and the scope is leupold 2 power.
The sling is custom made by me to fit my needs. My load was 90 gr. of
pyrodex P. Hornday 45 caliber xtp bullet and "bulk packed"
orange sabots. I have the barrel sighted to be dead on at 50 yards.
Thank
you Fred, and all the people at Bullberry for making me a great barrel.
